The Gathering Well:
Motherhood

In other eras and places, women mothered in community. We would meet at the fire or the well and discuss not only the challenges and joys of mothering but also the deeper questions of life. Surrounded by sisters, cousins, and neighbors, we found our way together through the worries and uncertainties about our kids and also about ourselves as mothers. And if we were stuck in a deep pit of worry, we could turn to a village elder – a mother, grandmother, or spiritual leader who would help us find our way.

Now we’re expected to mother alone. Even if we have a partner, it’s not enough to offset the role that the village used to fill. We were never meant to do this alone. The task is too big and the stakes are too high. We need each other and a safe guide to help make sense of the journey and steady us through the inevitable unsteadiness of mothering. As we know, anxiety attaches onto the things we care most about.

And there is nothing we care about more than our kids

At The Well

There are many questions that swirl in the minds and hearts of mothers. Here are a few of them:

• Are my kids okay?

• Am I a good enough mother?

• How do I navigate the grief that arises at each of my kids’ milestones and transitions so that I can make room for the joy?

• Where is my pre-mother self and how do I remain connected to her?

• And lest we forget our sense of humor: “What am I going to make for dinner?!?”

Within the safety of a cohort of other mothers, you will receive the comfort and guidance that will allow you to explore these questions, reduce the anxiety of mothering, and find more joy.

You will have an opportunity to bring your questions and worries about your kids to the power of a safe vessel, where you will find your self-trust and a bigger trust in the unfolding story of your kids’ lives.

We will gather not only to share challenges and stuck places, but also to celebrate milestones and joy. Motherhood is everything to the nth degree, and all of it deserves to be witnessed and held in a loving and safe community: the pain and worry and also the pride and joy. When the width and depth of the emotions are witnessed, something inside of a mother breathes more deeply, for we’re not seeking answers so much as the felt experience of being held by others and trusting that we’re not alone.

At the end of the nine months, you will have an opportunity to attend a live, in-person retreat, which will be a time to deepen connections to yourself and each other as well as providing the essential break from family life that allows mothers to fill their well and return feeling renewed.

Nuts and Bolts

We will gather together twice a month on Thursdays from 3:30pm-4:45pm ET / 12:30-1:45pm PT for nine months. Each gathering will include a brief teaching on mothering and plenty of time to share your stories and connect with each other. Occasionally we might have a guest speaker to offer wisdom on a particular aspect of parenting. There will be some months when we might only meet once (December, for example), but we might have a weekend workshop with a guest speaker.

To create the cohesion of a small cohort, this is a 9-month commitment.

if you’re not able to attend a live meeting, you’ll be able to listen to the recording afterward.

You will also have the option of being paired with another mother so that you can support each other between meetings.
